I am a member of an organization known as Belegarth Medieval Combat Society, as a few of you already know (whether you want to or not). I figured that since my descriptions of it often garner little better than blank stares, I'd throw up an entry with a news article and some photos. It's fun, I swear. Don't give me that look.

These are my boys, the Fighting Uruk-Hai.

And an excellent news article:

Enjoy!

This is really kewl. I enjoyed the video blurb, but I think the sport needs to evolve to allow more participation from other classes. In real life, I'd be much happier firing an arrow from 100 yards, than catching a mace in the teeth on the front lines (although next to my bed I have a bat AND a gun).
Never mind, I understand the hand- to- hand appeal. Have fun!

Actually, the sport included archers, javelins, and polearms. It gets pretty varied. I happen to be an excellent archer, having done it my whole life, but I don't really feel like springing for the bow and the arrow conversion kits. Still, we've got 'em.

As long as the homework and tests are getting as much if not more attention...

I guess I am not a hand-to-hand combat person. Oh I can mess someone up before they know what hit them and I have ungodly aim, but I don't find it entertaining. Our high school taught archery, self-defense, rife training and fencing as routine parts of physical ed. I also grew up in a military fam so knowing real combat was just natural.

Still prefer Rugby - cool and a lot more fun to watch.

But it's a lot less fun to play, and a lot more time-consuming. I like Belegarth, and I'm good at it. Also, it tends to schedule really well around school. So there. ;)

...you need to develop lifelong networks with outgoing people that will also get you jobs and other important opportunities later. Professional antisocial skills are not going to develop these. I remember the reunion of old rugby players coming out for a game - they kept in touch with the sport as a framework.

I am not sayin' you have to "give blood." Just there are some other things you've got to consider now that you're not a newb.

I don't know why, but this keeps popping in my head... about the 4:54 mark...

Oh wow... its like staring into Oglesby 904... only if one of the guys was a big, bulky computer nerd, and the other was a tiny, hairy Jew...

Still time to switch majors, isn't there?
