Talk about timely...

This is such an overblown story in my opinion. Yes he is a hypocrite, but unless there was some money laundering/fraud, sexual liaisons is not a valid reason for all the uproar, let alone resignations. And yeah, that includes republicans too (well, unless they are underage pages).

Big dollars. Pretty wife & kids. Power. Fame. Solid record.

Why do Americans continue to watch Simon pummel bad talent? BINGO!

In the same way, Publicans & Dems relish watching the other side fall from grace. We're all pretty good at justifying some perverted sense of victory-- even if the opposition lost all by itself. He was not forced to resign-- rather, pressured by Publicans. Are you bothered more as a Democrat or as a fellow John? You might be happy to learn that Hillary just lost 1 more Super D.

But I did hear the guy was kind of a dick.

I don't care if he is a dick, as long as he does a good job (which is something you do not hear any of the talking heads actually talk about... how good was he as governor?)

But yeah, it is amazing what just the threat of impeachment can do to a high-ranking politician (never mind that adultery is not impeachable. Wire fraud, yes.... but not sex.).

Now just imagine if Spitzer had:

1) Started a "war of aggression"
2) tortured
3) arbitrary detentions
4) committed war crimes
5) warrantless wiretapping
6) committed election fraud
7) outed a covert CIA operative
8) committed gross negligence in the Katrina aftermath.

Well, then those same Republican would be absolutely frothing at the mouth to impeach!

You can throw as much venom as you want at the Republican Party for leaping on people who screw up, but the simple fact is that those actions do warrant impeachment. So why are the Dems still cringing, whining, and empowering the Bush administration? You don't like that only the Republicans play rough? Play rough! I don't like the Bush administration, or the Republican Party at the moment, but at least they have some balls. I damn near laugh, these days, whenever I hear Democrats talking about facing up and change and all that bull. Grow a pair, and impeach him, if he deserves to be impeached. Or, and here's a really radical one, stop funding the God Damned war. No deadlines, no conditions, just vote to pull funding by xx/xx/xx. And then do it. It's the promise that won them that much-vaunted majority. How about they lean on that majority to actually fucking do something?

Christ I'm sick of the sideways references to half-defined infringements. I want to see something done, or else I want to see the entire Democratic party shut the hell up. Their choice.

The dems are playing very rough. Impeachment would not force Bush or his party out of the White House. Bush himself has been his own destruction, more effectively than impeachment. We all know he deserves impeachment, but it turns out we can instead use his dumb ass to discredit all of his supporters, too. Every stupid speech, comment and vote he makes about things like waterboarding furthers a war crimes case against him, too.

Allowing chimpie and his cronies to continue on his course has been the most effective way to dismantle his entire fat-cat party. Hastert's seat loss to a political neophyte, similar key election turnovers, the inability of the RNCC to recruit republican candidates, the newbies casting the deciding vote on FISA and the expiration of the tax cuts for the wealthy are just the beginning of a very bad season for the republicans and the wealth class that supports them.

They can leap on Spitzer for being stupid and horny and spending his own money in the dumbest way possible and that will command about two weeks of the news cycle. It is the republicans that will bear the brunt of the horrible economy, job losses, oil profiteering and diversion of funds to the war machine.

Now RNCC funds disappearing into the pockets of their treasurer are bringing a long-term dem strategy to much quicker fruition.

It is not the Republicans who will bear the brunt of all their screwups. It's me, who's going to be entering the job market in two to four years. It's my brothers, and my sister. It's the entire country. Leaving "chimpie" and his cronies to their own devices may end up with them looking stupid, but every vote they make poorly is a vote they're allowed to make. Allowing the GOP to rhino-roll over the constitution may build a great war-crimes trial, but we're still stuck with the results of their actions. I don't think it's worth that, no matter how much personal satisfaction it may end up granting.

It is about destroying the "permanent republican majority" that was planned, and put into motion when your parents were children. This administration has been planned ever since the Nixon administration. The president and his brother were the heirs to the throne a long, long time ago. What was not really planned was the ultimate greed and stupidity of the players that were going to become ultimately drunk with the power and money.

This is a lot larger than the chimp, but he is an effective cure. Once these people are fully discredited and out of power, there will be a lot of repairs that can be done in time to make your entrance into the job market a lot more promising. The point is to remove all of them, all of the people that have been working to pull up the ladder before you even got to the first rung. We repaired a lot after Reagan/Bush Sr. It will happen again.

While giving them enough rope to hang themselves will put them out of the picture for the time being, it still doesn't change the fact that we will have to clean up their messes. The longer they go unchecked, the bigger the mess. I'm just not sure I trust the Democratic Party enough to believe that they're capable of walking the line between allowing the GOP enough leeway to wreck itself, and giving them enough control to screw all of us over for a long time. I just think it'd be a lot safer to cut them off now, before they get the chance to push us into Iran, or pass another Patriot Act, or whatever else they can think up. Yes, they're killing their party, but at what cost to the rest of us? I'm just not sure America can afford it. Plus, I'm pretty sure you're giving them Dems a lot more credit than they deserve in terms of this strategy, but I figure you're probably better informed on party workings than I am. Either way, too dicey for my tastes.

Impeachment would solve none of this. Impeached, the president can still stay in office. The likelihood of getting an impeachment with as many supporters in congress was also unlikely until around now. At this point he is a lame duck, so there is not point in seeking impeachment. Key congressional seats were just turned over to the dems. Within days, teh president's policies began being overturned one by one (which is why he is suddenly very reachable by the press and whining about security). Items that are not being overturned now, especially executive orders, can all be discarded without ceremony next January.

I've been following the news and listening to a lot of Bill Maher lately. Not a healthy combination.

...for a huge liberal/independent majority, democrat president, and turn of overall agenda. Then it is not impeachment but International war crimes tribunal that I'm working for.
