Gas lawnmowers can be right bastards. Now if she were beating up a push mower, that would be irrational.

Hey, if you need to release some anger, the lawnmower is the way to go. What's silly is how she's doing it. No bat, or ax, or wood plank with a rusty nail in it. If I were beating the crap out of my old, used up, mechanical appliance, you can guarantee I wouldn't do it half way. I would put the hurt on that appliance.

Popular belief in the catharsis theory remains strong despite the
theory's dismal record in research findings. According to the
catharsis hypothesis, acting aggressively or even viewing aggression is an effective way to reduce anger and aggressive feelings. One likely reason for the continued widespread belief in catharsis is that the mass media continue to endorse the view that expressing anger or aggressive feelings is healthy, constructive, and relaxing, whereas restraining oneself creates internal tension that is unhealthy and bound to lead to an eventual blowup.

(A) Ok, so maybe the crazy lady was thoughtfully displacing- the- shit- out- of her pent- up anger. While studies point to the fact that displacing anger is not an effective method, I do agree with her choice of victims & would feel better about the safety of her human companions.

(B) MAYBE she really was just pissed- off with the mower. Then, the meticulous cartoon violence that ensued & eventual hammer throw SHOULD scare the hell out of me. I've been upset at tools, tractors & toys. BUT NEVER TO THE POINT OF NEEDING TO COMPLETELY DEMOLISH THE THING-- AS SOME SORT OF SICK SATISFYING EMOTIONAL DECONSTRUCTION.

Yeah, but those old pull cords can be a bitch. Maybe next time, she could just change the oil every year or two? OR she could smash her head against the sidewalk to silence the voices...

What we really did not see was what the lawnmower did to provoke her. Perhaps it tried to jump her ?

Another element: My father is all about repairing things. Especially things that should really be retired and sent off to an appliance recycling facility. It is like a sport to him. Nothing short of fully destroying something would convince him that it was finally time to replace some of this stuff. Perhaps this woman lives with a depression survivor, or a horrible cheapskate.
